Annotation
The China Star was a four-page tabloid associated with Chinese Daily published twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays (a frequency known in Chinese as a sanrikan (‘three-day-journal’). Contributions came from Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Vietnam and Singapore, while its sales agents could be found in Hong Kong, Kowloon, the New Territories, Guangzhou, Foshan, Manila, New York and Singapore. Its content included satirical comic strips, gossip and news from ‘places of pleasure’ (brothels) and the sing-song industry, and political reviews. For much of its life, it was engaged in a bitter rivalry with the popular tabloid Guzi .
