Annotation

The one surviving copy of Xin Xing’s first issue has a cover featuring the infrastructure of American towns. Its content included political reviews, translated fiction, poetry, science news, comics and photographs of paintings (mainly by Tan Zhuyao). Its articles tended to promote peace and democracy with a pro-American stance and much hope for the United Nations. Translated articles take up half the magazine, with pieces including Belgian folk songs, French Literature and reports on new inventions from the United States. Nearly all the articles were written in vernacular Chinese to the extent of including vernacular translations published alongside a selection of passages from the Verses of Chu.
