Annotation

Yinguang was founded by Wei Chunqiu (Lingxiaosheng), Pan Qingzhong, Yang Weiwen, with Wei also serving as its editor. According to a prefatory note in its first issue, the inspiration behind the magazine were Shanghai’s many film magazines at a time when Hong Kong had none. Its contents included many illustrations, film stills and introduction to both national and Hollywood films. Articles discussed subjects such as intertitles, costumes and the difference between ‘Northern translation’ (i.e. Shanghai) and ‘Hong Kong translation’ film terminology. Noteworthy was its coverage of Rudolph Valentino’s death and ‘first-ever-election of Chinese films’ which listed all films made or screened in Hong Kong from 1925-26 and supplied a voting ticket for readers to choose their favourite works.
